Japanese-inspired spa and hotel on Hasseludden in the Stockholm archipelago. Ofuro baths, outdoor pools, and sauna with views across the water.
Yasuragi occupies a peninsula on Hasseludden, 25 minutes from central Stockholm by commuter rail. The building was designed around Japanese bathing principles: ofuro soaking baths, an emphasis on water temperature sequence, outdoor bathing elements facing the archipelago water. The result is a Scandinavian-Japanese hybrid that takes both traditions seriously rather than treating either as decoration.
The archipelago setting is the other half of what makes Yasuragi work. The Stockholm archipelago is an unusually beautiful piece of geography: thousands of islands, granite, pines, cold Baltic water. The outdoor elements of Yasuragi face directly onto it. The combination of a serious Japanese spa infrastructure with an actual Nordic natural environment is unusual enough to earn a place on this list independently of any question of fashion or marketing.
