About this venue

Varberg Kallbadhus stands on a pier over the Kattegat, the arm of the North Sea between Sweden and Denmark. The building is Victorian-era timber construction, painted in the white and ochre palette of 19th-century Swedish public buildings. It is among the oldest intact kallbadhus structures in Scandinavia, and the fact that it remains in active daily use rather than preserved as heritage is significant.

Varberg is a smaller town than Malmö, which means the kallbadhus is genuinely used by the local population rather than primarily by visitors. In winter, the Kattegat is cold in the way that counts. The pier extends far enough from shore that the building feels surrounded by water. This is the kallbadhus form functioning as intended: a public bathhouse where the act of bathing is an act of engagement with the actual sea outside.
