Pier sauna reaching into the Öresund since 1898. Sauna rooms built over open water, cold plunge directly into the strait. Malmö's oldest public bathhouse, still in daily use.
Ribersborgs Kallbadhus was built in 1898 on a pier extending from the Malmö shoreline into the Öresund. The building sits on the water rather than beside it: the sauna rooms are positioned directly above the sea, and the ladders down to the water are the cold plunge. There is no pool, no controlled temperature, no waiting — just the Öresund, whatever temperature it is that day.
The structure is wooden, white-painted, and unchanged in its essentials since construction. It is open year-round, which means in winter the sea is cold in the serious Scandinavian sense. The Öresund is visible through the windows from the sauna benches. On the Denmark-facing side, you can see Copenhagen. This is what the kallbadhus form was designed to offer: a democratic public sauna with open water beneath it, available to anyone who shows up.
