Israel's bathing culture is a layered mix: Ottoman hammam heritage, Russian banya traditions brought by waves of immigration, and a Tel Aviv gay sauna scene that has no parallel in the region. Our seven picks run from a candlelit hammam on HaRakevet Street to a pier-facing spa in old Jaffa, with stops in Jerusalem and the Rishon LeZion suburbs.
"Tel Aviv did not invent the sauna. It invented the version that stays open until 6am."
Israel's bathing culture is built from sediment. The Ottoman hammam left its vaulted stone geometry across the old cities. Russian and Eastern European immigration brought the banya tradition in several waves, seeding a network of neighbourhood steam rooms that still operates in the suburbs of Tel Aviv and Rishon LeZion. On top of that came something else: a gay sauna scene centred on Tel Aviv that is, by any regional measure, extraordinary.
The city's LGTB+ infrastructure is dense and functional. Hamam on HaRakevet Street is the most established gay sauna, operating for years at high community ratings. Saraya in Jaffa occupies the waterfront and runs 24 hours. Fire and Ice at Atarim Square combines sauna and ice bath in one of the city's more architecturally interesting spots, above the promenade. The Sauna Club on Carlebach Street skews more nightlife-adjacent. Together they represent a scene with genuine depth, not just a single flagship venue.
