Sauna is not a feature in Finland. It is the architecture of the week. Public neighborhood saunas, lakeshore smoke saunas, container saunas anchored to ferry-deck buildings, hotel rooftop saunas with views of the Baltic. Our Finnish Curator's Picks are the ones that even Finns travel to.
"The first place a Finn takes a foreigner is the sauna. The second place is also the sauna."
Finland has more saunas than cars. Two million saunas, five and a half million people, a national pastime that predates the Iron Age. The country's sauna culture is on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list. To visit Finland and not visit a sauna is to miss the country entirely.
Our gold list of Finnish saunas is biased toward two things: public access and atmosphere. Hotel-only saunas score lower; legendary public saunas like Kotiharju and Rajaportti score higher. Container saunas and floating saunas score on novelty plus actual löyly quality, not just the social media photos.
