The banya is a Russian sauna only in the sense that the onsen is a Japanese sauna. It is its own institution. Birch venik, parilka heat, plunge pool, repeat. The banya is a high-temperature wet-steam ritual using birch or oak veniks (leaf bundles) to flagellate the body, drive blood to the skin, and exfoliate. It is not the same as a Finnish sauna and the people who do it the most will tell you so. It predates the Christianization of Russia.
