London is the most heterogeneous sauna city in Europe. Russian banya (Banya No.1), Turkish hammam (Porchester Spa, opened 1929), Finnish wood-fired (Community Sauna Baths, on the Hackney canals), Korean jjimjilbang (Floatworks in Vauxhall) all coexist within a Tube ride. The full London catalogue is in the iOS app.
"London has every sauna tradition the empire ever imported, and a few it invented."
London's bathhouse history is older than most of its residents realise. Porchester Spa (1929, Bayswater) is one of the last operating municipal Turkish baths in Britain. Ironmonger Row (1931, Old Street) ran a similar service until renovation. What's new is the wave of independent saunas in the canals and ex-industrial spaces: Community Sauna Baths (Hackney Wick), East Three (Hackney Marshes), Arc Club (Camberwell), all founded since 2018 by people who learned the form abroad and brought it back.
Our London Curator's Picks deliberately span traditions: a Russian banya, a Turkish hammam, a Finnish wood-fired sauna, and a hybrid modern complex. The iOS app catalogues everything else: gyms with proper saunas excluded, hotel spas mostly excluded, public sweat-rooms with real craft included.
Each card links to a full venue page with hours, access notes, type, and editorial context. Cards are ordered alphabetically.
